DREAM FORUM - sleep paralysis
POSTED September 11, 2011, 21:07 by sureyawright (Viewed 446 times)

THE DREAM : Ever since I can remember I've woken up from sleeping but unable to move or talk. There is always more to it...a dreaming piece ...where something bad is happening but I can't do anything about it...I can't even yell for help. I've been researching ever since the internet came to be and I'm on information overload. I first found out about "awake during sleep paralysis" which has a sound explination...simply...that the brain paralizes the body during a dream but if you wake up during this process your body is still paralized. I can go years without it happening or sometimes it happens to me every night several times a night ...night after night after night then stops. Every time I look into it there are more and more opinions about what it is. I told a doctor about it once and she sent me to sleep study to see if I was having a type of seizure that only happens in your sleep...nothing happened that night of the sleep study so it was dismissed as being nothing. I've learned to deal with it better now...and it hasn't happened to me in a few years. But now my son seems to be experiencing the same thing and I don't know what to do. Any suggestions on helping kids cope?

Well I used to get this and it is scary. It does ware off with age. All I can say to you is to tell him that is does get better. When I first got this it scared the living daylights out of me. But when I started to get used to it I started to think 'Oh its just that sleep paralysis thing again'-----------------------------------------------------

I was 15 when I 1st had the experience. It's terrifying to wake up & not be able to move. Those who never had the experience can't comprehend it or learn vicariously through others. I'm now 47 & have met only 1 other person who had the same experience. I wished my mother was able to comfort me & provide answers to calm my fears then. I just kept it to myself because how do you muster up a vocabulary of words when your not sure as to what you've experienced yet, exactly. Tell your son what you told us, except just omit the bad screamless cries of helplessness. Say showers help wash away any left over thoughts. Hope your son doesn't have the bad dream part of it. But if he does, just make light of it. Don't be too dramatic or over doding & show NO fear of it. DO share that you WERE fearful @ 1st. Say the fear is gone. Teach him to just move a finger or blink an eye, wiggle his nose or a toe, almost instantly his brain will receive the signal & slowly begin to wake up. After a few minutes the "sleep mode" (I wouldn't say paralysis just yet) subsides and by golly, fully awake & ready to rock!! If he has any iky lingering thoughts too, point him to the shower! Then whip up a lil breakfast, he'll get over it better than we 1st had in no time. He may want to sleep with you a night or two which is fine, just don't make it a habit. Hope that helps! REPLY

DREAM INTERPRETATION PROGRAM: When you post a dream a list of symbols will appear here. They will help you work out what has caused your dream. The following dream symbols all appear in THIS DREAM.

YELLING: Dreams are metaphors so what do you think yelling could symbiolize in your own emotions. If we speak in a brutal and honest way its almost the same as yelling. It shows we do not care about trying to hide unpleasant truths. Conversely yelling may show that you want to say something and be brutally honest but cannot because of rules or you are just trying to be gentle with people. Yelling can symbolise other frustrations - it could be a metaphor for your attempts to make something clear. You could have explained something a million times yet the message still did not get through. Dreams may not necessarily be about you and so a yelling dream may represent your attempts to understand someones strength of feeling. Understanding other people and being able to get along with them is a vital part of being a human being. Effective communication and the ability to emphasise is something that we need to think about.
